Q&A About Medical Micro-Needling
What is Micro-Needling?
A medical device used for the purpose of breaking down old scar tissue and stimulate skin cells for proliferation. This multiplication results in the creation of new tissue layers of elastin and collagen fibers, as well as improved blood supply.
How does it work?
The device glides gently along the skin, penetrating the layers of the skin closest to the surface, of a depth of up to 2mm to create numerous tiny needle wounds. The therapy encourages the body to respond through creation of new collagen and elastin fibers. As the skin responds, it plumps and thickens, reducing the appearance of scars, wrinkles and fine lines.
What conditions does micro-needling treat?
- Mild to moderate acne scarring
- Surgical scarring
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Stretch marks
- Pore size and skin texture
- Keloid scarring
What can I expect from the procedure?
The skin is cleaned and numbing cream is applied to lessen discomfort. For better results we use a collagen-stimulating product like Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin-C serum or skin lightener for pigmentation during the procedure. A small handheld pen like device with a sterile, disposable tip with 12 tiny needles is then used to pierce the skin. Our needling pen’s multi-speed and adjustable needle depth allow needles to pierce the skin’s layer at 90 degrees and increase the absorption of products. After the treatment, soothing Vitamin-C serum or Hyaluronic acid are used to hydrate, heal and protect the skin.
How will I look after treatment?
Most people will experience mild redness and possibly some swelling. The same way you may feel with a mild sunburn. Effects may last for 24-48 hours and there may be pinpoint bleeding and/or bruising. Most people look fine the next day and can wear our Oxygenetix make up to conceal and heal any red or irritate areas. Within several days to several weeks you will notice a smoother, brighter, and more radiant appearance, however, the full effects of the treatment do not appear until several months later. Timeframes will vary from person to person.
What is the down time like?
The inflammatory reaction of the skin is extremely short and fades significantly within hours from redness to pinkish that may last for 12 to 48 hours. Timeframes will vary from person to person. In order to reduce visible redness, we will recommend products after the procedure, and to protect the skin with zinc based sunblock.
What effects does micro-needling have on the skin?
Improves the appearance of stretch marks
Reduces pore size
Improves the quality and texture of the skin
Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
Improves the look of disfiguring scars from surgery, accidents or acne.
Will it be painful?
Numbing cream will be applied prior to the treatment which drastically minimizes or eliminates any pain altogether.
Are there any risks?
The tiny pricking channels close within one hour, and because the procedure is performed under clinical conditions, the likelihood of infection occurring is extremely minimal.
How many treatments do I need and how often?
Micro-needling can be safely repeated every 4-6 weeks until you achieve the desired results. For collagen induction we recommend 6 treatments for best results. We have a package of buy 5 get 1 free. The number of treatments required also depends on how each individual responds to the treatments, and the extent of the damage at the beginning Micro-needling can be used on all skin parts of the body (neck, décolleté, arms, legs, etc). Most people will begin to see results after the very first appointment. Individual results my vary.
